Multipath

Interactive simulator on the effects of underwater acoustic multipath.

In underwater long-range propagation there are many acoustic rays connecting an acoustic source and a distant receiver. This is called multipath. Multipath causes significant alteration of the received sound - compared to that emitted by the source – which increases with distance and depends on the ocean environment (sound-speed profile).

The simulator allows the user to comprehend the effects of multipath, by actually listening to familiar sounds as they are received 300 km away from the source in various ocean environments. In addition the multipath propagation is graphically represented, exposing significant differences among the various environments

The user can select the ocean environment from the world map. Several pre-recorded sounds can be selected, while live recording of sounds through the microphone is also available.
